Week 6 Vocabulary

1. Matter Anything that mass and takes up space.
2. Element Composed of one type of an atom and cannot be broken down into a simpler substance.
3. Atom The smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element.
4. Subatomic Particle Particles smaller than an atom, that combine together to form an atom. (Protons, Neutrons, Electrons)
5. Proton A positively charged subatomic particle that resides within the atomic nucleus.
6. Neutron A subatomic particle contained n the nucleus. It has NO net electric charge, unlike the proton's positive electric charge.
7. Electron A subatomic particle that carries a negative electrical charge, and resides outside of the nucleus.
8. Valence Electron An electron in the outer most shell (energy level) of an atom, which can combine with other atoms for form molecules.
9. Nucleus The center of an atom where all of the mass of that atom is located. It is make up of protons and neutrons.
10. Electron Cloud The region arond the nucleus of an atom, where electrons are found.
